Gas goes up, you can watch the national mood change to "throw the incumbents" out. It's happened before - people think about their wallets before they think about anything else. And if has been empty for a long time under you, they may well look somewhere else for relief. Good or bad.
You start with damaged people, people this party has put second to their donors in the banks for years, and think you are gonna drag them out to fight for you?
You gotta build up your army before the fight, else you lose that advantage. You can build it up during the war, but you lose a lot, as we proved in WWII.
