Here's an interesting example: During WWII the Brits had cracked the German codes, and knew that a massive German air raid was planned to hit the historic city of Coventry. However, the British leadership (Churchill) decided that the code breaking ability would be compromised if the citizens of Coventry were warned and the city evacuated beforehand. So no warning was given and the city was devastated with many deaths and casualties. A Brit I met in the '70's mentioned the matter, and after some discussion, said, "Yes, Churchill was a bastard, but then we needed one".
As it turned out, however, I later learned, the German leadership didn't pay much attention to reports from their informants in England, and couldn't believe that their codes had been broken, and had Coventry been warned it probably would not have compromised the code breaking.
Well, it's an interesting story and might have some similarity to this latest. We do seem to have a bastard in the White House these days, the only problem is, that he's giving away the keys to the kingdom for basically nothing. I guess he could be the anti-Churchill.
