6. I still have the book on my shelf

and read it 25 years ago after hearing the author (David Fromkin) on a talk radio show discussing the book and current events at the time (build up for Gulf War). It was one the most fascinating books I had ever read that explained what got us to this point (at least where we were in the early '90s, which is still boiling and bubbling today).

Ottoman Empire... which appears (thanks to Erdogan) to be moving towards resurrecting itself.
