a forward-facing child seat. Usually, they are facing backwards the first year. As they get bigger, they graduate from a car seat to a booster seat, but they are not supposed to ride upfront until they are much older. An airbag deploying in the front seat can seriously injure a kid or a 'tween.

The back seat is the safest place for them.
