(6,496 posts)I agree about the independent streak. Also, I disagree with the statement that Maine is like the Alabama of the North. You can't judge this place by the actions some of the politicians take. We also have King as senator who is pretty much like a democrat. Ever been to Portland, ME? Go there and then see how much like Alabama it is. What about issues like ranked choice voting and medical marijuana? Maine has been a leader in those issues. Also, Maine has pretty good voting policies. You can register to vote on election day. People in prison are allowed to vote. People care a lot about the public schools around here. Environmental policies like the clean water act originated from Maine politicians. Mainers care a lot about the environment. Every city I know of in Maine does no sort, curb side recycling. We've had bottle deposits to encourage recycling my whole life. They recently raised the age for smoking to 21 here. Not an issue that concerns me so much, but it shows how much they care about kids. Minimum wage is $10, which is better than a lot of states still. Maine minimum wage will be $11 in 2019 and then $12 in 2020. That's just off the top of my head.
