2. I find it odd to need to discuss leaving a political party with friends and relatives.

I can see discussing something like leaving a spouse, leaving college, leaving a country, leaving one's religious organization, leaving a job,.....but a political party?
That seems to me like discussing whether one should change one's grocery.

Now that just tells me that I have failed to realize how attached one can become to a political party.
I am a registered Democrat, and could never imagine switching to being a republican.

But also, politics is not my life. Maybe if it were, I would feel differently.
