Then consider that John Kerry, with 28 years of seniority saw the State Department as an opportunity that would let him do more than he could do as Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations committee, which provides oversight on the State Department. (In fact, had he stayed in the Senate and won re-election in 2014 - having won 2/3 rds of the vote in 2008 - he would now be second only to Leahy in the Senate. (Meaning he could chair any one of the committees he was on - including the powerful Finance Committee - although he would likely never give up SFRC)
Not to mention, resigning now is not the end of questions. At minimum, people should ask why he did essentially nothing to protect the State Department. Many there had hoped that given his career, he would end the hallowing out of the department that Tillerson started. He let everyone there down.
Not to mention - maybe through no fault of his own given the President - what major accomplishments has he had?
