In reply to the discussion: Iran's Ahmadinejad says that Israel will be 'eliminated' [View all]Canuckistanian
(42,290 posts)40. It was a misquote from Ayatollah Khomeini
The most accurate quote translated from Farsi (the original language of the quote) was, "Israel should vanish from the page of time"
Shiraz Dossa, a professor of Political Science at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada, also believes the text is a mistranslation.[22]
Ahmadinejad was quoting the Ayatollah Khomeini in the specific speech under discussion: what he said was that "the occupation regime over Jerusalem should vanish from the page of time." No state action is envisaged in this lament; it denotes a spiritual wish, whereas the erroneous translation "wipe Israel off the map" suggests a military threat. There is a huge chasm between the correct and the incorrect translations. The notion that Iran can "wipe out" U.S.-backed, nuclear-armed Israel is ludicrous.[23][24][25]

The Ayatollah was referring to the regime of the occupiers of Palestine. NOT Israel in particular, but rather the current government in Israel at the time. Which, undoubtedly, describes the current government.
In NO WAY does it say Israel itself should be eliminated as a state.

I suggest that one read the entire transcript for one's self. Misleading and incendiary title

Pissing into the wind, and just about as newsworthy. Not real LBN, but OP gets to score a point.
