8. I think the reason Texas does well economically is mostly because of the blue cities.

It is the Democratically run cities that have been attracting technology and other jobs. It was quite a coup when Austin/Travis County landed the Formula One race. And of course Austin has been home to SXSW and Austin City Limits for years, both of which bring in a lot of revenue for the city and state.

Had the article included health insurance, or rather its lack, as a criterion, Texas would have been number 1. Republicans refused to expand Medicaid under the ACA and the state has the distinction of having the largest population of uninsured in the country, for several years in a row. It also has one of the highest maternal death rates in the country.

Why do voters refuse to see that when you vote for Republicans, you get more poverty, lower educational achievement, and higher rates of people without health insurance? I suppose all that is worth a few backward judges for some people.
