Angela Merkel has been the German Chancellor for 15 years and is the de facto head of the EU.

Christine Lagarde runs the IMF.

Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House.

Mary Barra is the first female CEO of a major US auto manufacturer. Ginni Romety runs IBM.

Melinda Gates' philanthropic work is an order of magnitude greater in terms of its impact.

Megan Rapinoe is a great athlete and has raised the profile of pay parity in sports.

Rachel Maddow is shattering all the records for viewership for female anchors.

The fact that there's room in the top ten spots on that list for Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson, Taylor Swift and Madonna and not any of the women above tells you everything you need to know about how far gender equality has progressed.

What do Americans "admire" about women?

a. They've been at one point in their lives at least young, pretty and/or charismatic enough to have been on TV or in a movie
b. They've given some money/time to a charity and/or adopted a brown child.

Seriously?
