Jan 2021

Nearman is a former software engineer and current Oregon director for the Freedom Foundation, an anti-union group.

Nearman has drawn both criticism and praise for his involvement with controversial measures and groups, including being the vice president of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, an organization labeled as an “anti-immigrant hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Leaders of the group deny being a hate group and, instead, say they focus on enforcing existing immigration laws.

In 2017, Nearman’s then-legislative aide Angela Roman was arrested for illegally transferring a gun to Matthew Heagy, a convicted felon.

Roman and Heagy were both members of the Oregon Three Percenters, a right-wing militia group, and attended a pro-Trump rally at the Oregon State Capitol. Heagy was arrested for pepper-spraying a state trooper.

After Roman’s arrest, Nearman voiced his support for his aide, who later went on to unsuccessfully run for Congress.
