Dear Senator Collins,
Thank you for your constructive proposal in offering Republican support for lifting the debt limit. The proposed exchange of Democrats abandoning the President's domestic agenda in exchange is thought provoking and completely consistent with Republican values.
I wonder what part of the "Build Back Better" legislation troubles you so. Is it the fact that it is a means to distribute the bounty of our wealthy nation to the poor and middle classes? Is it the unfamiliar concept of providing benefits to citizens that are fully paid for by revenue increases and operational efficiencies?
While intriguing in it's bravado, I can not forsee a time when this proposal will be acceptable to the American people. Perhaps a counter offer should be considered: The bill to allow the treasury to pay the bills ALREADY authorized by the Congress and several Presidents be approve by UNANIMOUS CONSENT. It can be the first step in your party's return to governance rather than obstruction.
I am returning your proposal via Senate page. I believe that the modifications to this offer are best accomplished internally...That is, in the confines of your lower colon. By rolling the document tightly, it can comfortably be inserted via your rectum.
Sincerely,
Chuck Schumer
Majority Leader
