(30,811 posts)It's part of our human nature to establish a pecking order. We adults control those inclinations (most of us), but children are ruled by their instincts.
There has been a lot of increased awareness in the schools I've taught in over the last decade or so about spotting and reporting bullying. We're all on the lookout for it. Unfortunately, kids are very good at hiding their bad behavior. As a high school teacher, bullying could be going on right in the classroom and I might now know it. At that age, there are 'looks', whispers, cryptic comments, and cell phone messages that can inflict damage, and none of the kids involved want to tell the teacher, including the victim.
Fights are very visible though, and administrators are in charge of figuring out who attacked who and whether or not bullying is happening or if the kids are just mad at each other over something. It's not easy.
