It seems more than a little cynical to decide not to execute the guy because he might be innocent, but then make sure he never gets his life back, either.

The Europeans tell a joke about three black guys in an American prison. One says he got thirty years. The other two ask what he did. He said he stole a bicycle. The second says he was in for twenty years. The other two ask what he did. He says he stole a box of cereal. The third one says he is in for fifteen years. The other two ask what he did. He says he didn’t do anything. The other immediately tell him to stop bullshitting them, because everybody knows that if you didn’t do anything, the sentence was only ten years.
