In reply to the discussion: Thieves target Home Depot in California, making off with hammers, crowbars and other tools [View all]JohnnyRingo
(18,619 posts)Judging by the replies, some seem to think this was a case of where they smashed the window and stole goods in the middle of the night, but that isn't how this new crime works.
They've been doing this around here for a year or so where one or two thieves walk into a Loews or Home Depot and walk out with a couple thousand dollars in big ticket items like A/C units, backpack leaf blowers, and power tools. They hop in the car with no plates and speed away.
They get away with it because they know the store has a no apprehension policy and is too cheap to hire an off duty cop. They're afraid someone might get hurt and sue, or get worker comp. Regardless, the corporation doesn't want cashiers playing Dirty Harry.
The stores have been quiet about this because once people find out they can walk out with anything they want and not be stopped, they will.
