1. Where I grew up, the town constable always followed my bus until it turned down a country road

But on the major state highway, he was there because people sometimes never stopped for the flashing red lights. When the bus driver blared his horn, all the others on the bus would turn and try to get the license plate for the driver before the constable followed us.

It was also his way of telling crossing students to stop in front of the bus. We also waited for the driver to wave us across the street. Horn went off, we stopped in front of the bus because someone was either passing on the right or blowing passed the stopped bus.

I almost got hit twice crossing the street. And when we petitioned NY to lower the speed limit in our hamlet from 55 to 40, they ignored us, as did the county and the town.
