The Virginia class is the most advanced stealth attack submarine in the US inventory. The Russians would not have been able to detect it unless the sub wanted to be detected.

And even if they deliberately allowed themselves to be detected, it is pretty safe money to bet that there was another, undetected, sub in the area observing the whole thing.
