but for them, it's artificial. Stick enough needles into it and it will pop and disappear. They'll be left naked in the real world which will be unbearably drab to most of them and I think this terrifies them.

That's why they're losing it over what I thought was a fairly mild speech, given the circumstances.

That means it's working.
