(3,489 posts)I've never been to jail or prison, thankfully, but I've spoken to people who have. None of them endured sexual violence while behind bars but their stories were invariably grim and unsettling nonetheless.
Unfortunately, our prison system is entirely centered around punishment and vengeance rather than rehabilitation and redemption. We treat inmates like animals and then bizarrely wonder why they behave like animals. When people come out of prison, they're ostracized and barred from decent jobs despite supposedly having paid their "debt to society." Far too few employers will give an ex-con a chance one they're out of prison, so they're left with little choice but to go back to crime to support themselves.
On top of that, it's entertainment for the masses with networks like A&E airing shows like "60 Days In." I was flabbergasted and disgusted when I learned that show exists. The gist is that they send innocent people into prison undercover as inmates (and pay them for going in, of course).
