Not that I would not be happy to see the GOP circle the drain for several more election cycles, giving us time to shore up our shaky democracy. But if the "party of Lincoln" were to perish from the face of the earth, what would the 30-40% of the voters who are currently supporting them do?

I don't see many jumping to our side. Politics are too tribal for that. We are the bad guys in their minds. All I can see is the rise of one or more "conservative" parties in the place of the GOP.

Also, without the external threat of the Repubs, I think the Democratic Party would be in danger of implosion, or at least of schism along ideological lines.

Perhaps that would be a good thing too? As a nation, we might evolve from a two-party system to a more parliamentary system that allows for a broader range of ideological representation in the legislatures.

Ultimately, I think the two parties are too enmeshed in our current system and in the hearts and minds of the voters. They are both too big to fail.

Or that is my thought.
