(112,577 posts)SHS. But Latinx has not really been adopted or accepted by Hispanic populations for the most part out West-- or at least the Southwest. In Colorado, Westword did a survey a few years ago and interviews among Hispanic leaders and found (somewhat to their surprise it appears) that they felt it to be a "created" term among "East Coasters" that was not at all acceptable to communities that they were dealing with. Of course, that could change--might have already as that assessment was from a few years ago, but...
I'm happy to use any term that the vast communities themselves prefer, but I have to wonder about this one too. When activists thrust terminology on very broad and diverse people from a multitude of countries and backgrounds, it can backfire. Given that "Hispanic" is gender-neutral, it might just be the middle ground.
That said, SHS is just "shit-stirring" as performative racism as far as I am concerned. So she should be called out for that, regardless.
