(4,741 posts)Is stupidity, be it natural or willfully ingrained.
Most conspiracy fools have learned, at the hands of effective brainwashers, not to trust those who deal in reality, like scientists or, well, anyone who is expert in a subject, be it math, history, geography, psychology--doesn't matter the topic. Experts are not experts to them, but some kind of evil at work to destroy their world.
A substantial percentage of conspiracy theorists have been brainwashed since birth that faith is superior to reason and facts. They're the people brainwashed to deny reality if it conflicts with their beliefs.
Not all of them are religious, but a good many are, because religion is one of humanity's most effective brainwashing tools. But it can happen to all kinds of people, for many different reasons. Various forms of senility, a traumatic head injury or prolonged substance abuse can make an otherwise sane person become a gullible fool.
And then there are people that you just can't figure the cause.
Example: Linus Pauling, a brilliant person in his work as a scientist, but a shockingly bloody fool when it came to Vitamin C.
I don't know what causes otherwise brilliant people to believe crazy bollocks, but something happens to their brains that makes them impervious to reality when it comes to a particular topic (or topics, as the case may be). It's like they turn off the ability to say, "Is that true?" and jump straight to believing whatever they hear. Maybe they're vulnerable at that time for assorted reasons, such as mental fatigue or emotional strain. Or maybe it's arrogance that they are so smart, they don't have to verify anything. If it "makes sense" to them, that's good enough, because they're so smart donchaknow?
But something makes their minds weak enough to stop questioning and simply believe.
