3. I think because they actually bought up a bunch of regional banks

at least here on the east coast. So people who used to bank at indies or regionals found themselves suddenly under Wells Fargo.

Here in Philly, Wells Fargo took over Wachovia (that had earlier been First Union, that was previously Corestates, and in my case, my bank was originally a First Pennsylvania that is no more).
