What should be on the table is the preferential tax rate for long-term capital gains. The original intent may have been good, but the reality of it is the capital gains rate is now a 58-percent tax savings for anyone rich enough to defer his or her payday by two years.
Since the Republicans are totally unwilling to discuss any tax rate increase, this won't happen.
Also, since the Republicans are totally unwilling to discuss any tax rate increase, this means they are behaving like two-year-olds who don't want to eat strained squash.
