(137,243 posts)I have also been to Cleveland (again work-related) and always chuckled that it was my first time seeing "Pennsylvania's Great Lake" (Erie) but from the Ohio side.
One of my supervisors was also born and raised in Pittsburgh and talked about it non-stop. Whenever I was out there, I would remark to my coworkers there about how pretty it was in the area with the hills. Their response would be to pause, think about it, and then agree with a "I guess it is".
My old boss used to talk about how back when the steel mills were still belching soot, putting out laundry on clotheslines to dry was a nightmare. It has obviously been cleaned-up since but also with a loss of much of that industry.
HOWEVER it was one of the few places able to cash in on the "hospital system"/"medical research" trade, which really helped to transition the area out of the old "rust belt" moniker and into what has been a lucrative type of work.
I still think the best bet out there for the areas in Allegheny County outside Pittsburgh proper, is John Fetterman. He did not one but two, 67 county "listening" tours when he was running for Senator, so he has a feel for not just suburban areas, but also the small towns in the more rural counties.
If Fetterman and Biden can join together as part of some kind of town hall there, that would optimum.
Because this is an election year, it is almost guaranteed that Congress WILL take a longer "break" - most likely the entire month of August - so that allows them to all campaign. That would be a good time to schedule events with Biden and either or both of our Senators, along with Chris Deluzio and perhaps Summer Lee, who are also obviously running for re-election.
