I know for many years, one of my mother's favorite films WAS "Gaslight". Whenever "Turner" (TCM, as she was a big fan of Ted Turner and his networks when he owned them) would put it on, I would let her know and she would immediately turn it on.

At the time I comprehended the storyline but only recently connected that film (and its tactics) with the use of the term in political discourse. She was a history/political science major when in college and probably knew the analogy.
