Where things stand now
The Justice Department plans to subpoena Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison related to an investigation of possible obstruction of federal officers during recent protests, two sources said. The governor and Minneapolis mayor, also Democrats, are expected to get subpoenas, too, as the Trump administrations turbocharged, coast-to-coast immigration enforcement crackdown targets the state.
DOJ appealed a judges ruling that federal agents in Minnesota cant arrest or use pepper spray on peaceful protesters or stop people in their cars without cause.
DOJ launched a separate investigation after demonstrators interrupted Sunday service at a church where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent reportedly preaches.
Critics are denouncing DOJs handling of the fatal shooting this month of protester Renee Good in Minneapolis. While the FBI briefly opened a civil rights investigation into the ICE agent who shot Good, the probe pivoted to investigating Good and those around her, including her widow.
