New law aims to ban 3D-printed guns after UnitedHealthcare CEO murder [View all]

New York is poised to enact a first-of-its-kind law that would mandate 3D printers sold for home and business use to incorporate technology preventing them from manufacturing firearms. The requirement, also under consideration in California, aims to counteract the latest method for producing untraceable "ghost guns" that have increasingly appeared in criminal investigations.

The proposed legislation, however, faces scrutiny regarding the efficacy of the blocking technology, alongside concerns about its potential impact on personal privacy and constitutional rights.

While approximately one-third of U.S. states have already moved to ban or regulate build-it-yourself firearms—which lack serial numbers and bypass mandatory background checks—New York's initiative is unique in its focus on the manufacturing equipment itself, rather than the individuals who produce the weapons.

This push for blocking technology in two of the nation's most populous states could establish new industry standards for 3D printers. It also presents a potential blueprint for other Democratic-led states seeking to bolster their gun regulations, many of which already prohibit certain semiautomatic weapons and permit the temporary confiscation of firearms from individuals deemed a threat.
