That's insulting, if so. And weird.
In any event, the current pope could be absolutely fantastic, he could ordain gay women as priests, and personally conduct gay weddings in St. Peter's, and hand out condoms and birth control pills before every mass, for example - and that would not be any reason at all for an atheist to believe in any sort of god.
So I am not sure why it matters if anyone likes him or not, it seems to have nothing to do with whether someone believes in a god, or not. And the atheist mention is just odd, to me, it doesn't rock my head or world or whatever.
