In Ireland - the church's actions have been the greatest promoter of secularism in the nation.
It's kind of hard for such an institution to claim it's morally dangerous for them to not treat women as second-class citizens in regard to health care when you have spent so much time protecting males who abuse children.
Then there's the part about letting women die rather than provide them with healthcare because of their putrid, fanatical views of females as lower than dirt, in terms of their value in this world. Fuck any religious group with such an ideology. What grotesque excuses for misogyny flow from the minds of these theologians.
Then there's the part about hating liberation theology. Frank gets to put in a word for the poor but the church itself, including Frank, had no use for liberation theology because left wing political movements have been historically associated with overturning the ruling religious structures since the American Revolution.
In this the church is no different than protestant fundamentalism. Nor is it any different than protestant fundamentalism in its views of rights for homosexual citizens. It is also no different than protestant fundamentalism in its views of females as second-class citizens...in the eyes of god.
Since they had to get rid of Ratzinger to avoid having a sitting pope testify in criminal proceedings about knowledge of pedophile enabling, this guy is out there to distract from the continuation of the same right wing tactics and beliefs.
