(57,936 posts)My theory is that the Israelis discovered the tunnels earlier in the year than is reported.
I get most of my news from DU and could not understand from what I read here why in the world Israel was attacking Gaza, so I picked up a local (Los Angeles) Jewish news magazine that is handed out free in our library. Someone just leaves copies on a bench in a public area there. I gathered from reading that the problem was the tunnels.
Remember, Israel built a wall after the Second Intifada -- a peaceful, reasonable solution to the terror attacks.
Israel built a missile shield to defend against the rockets -- a peaceful, reasonable and very expensive solution to the terror attacks.
I can understand that discovering the tunnels or finding someone coming out of them could have set off the current attacks on Gaza.
The tunnels were a final way to circumvent Israel's defenses. One of the tunnel entrances was near a hospital that Israel attacked.
I don't think we are getting a fair report of Israel's motivations on DU. If the tunnel entrances or tunnel facilities are under schools or near schools and hospitals, it is understandable that Israel is trying to destroy the tunnel structures. That is probably why Israel is trying to warn civilians to leave certain areas.
No country has to put up with rockets and tunnels. We shall see what happens next. I am impressed with Israel's attempts with the wall and the shield to respond non-violently to the Palestinians. But the tunnels are a pretty horrible threat.
I have lived near the border of the US and another country. I can imagine how terrifying it is to live next to people who want you dead.
