It depends on the type of weapon. Semi-automatic magazine fed weapons, like the pistols normally issued to police, tend to need more cleaning.

When you fire one the burnt powder coats everything. It can be corrosive after a while,

Guns that are used a lot will get gunpowder residue built up which can cause problems.
