I am trying to keep an open mind as well. However, I do not think it is reasonable to say that Islam had nothing to do with this. Just as I don't think it's reasonable to say that Islam itself is entirely to blame. I think the doctrine of the religion (much like the doctrine of Judaism or Christianity) if followed rigidly according to its holy texts plays some role in all of this.
If the Bible and Koran specifically and explicitly forbade killing another human being for any reason then I think we'd have a lot less killing in the name of religion. Instead those books do prescribe certain situation where killing is acceptable, and in some cases encouraged.
