that have been 'smarter than everyone else' their whole lives. Rationalizing (and that's the right word) their behavior as the result of external forces and life circumstances is a dodge on their responsibilities. (which they would be more than quick to assign to everyone else, I might add)

"Economically disadvantaged" is a divorced mother of three, that lost her job at the mill -- and is trying to juggle rent and food assistance. And I guarantee she didn't show up in Washington. The car doesn't run -- cable is shut off, and electric threatened -- and child care is, a distant mirage. The people the WoPo is trying to highlight aren't victims of hard luck (and dislocation) -- they're mostly middle class grifters. Totally different mind-set. And I reserve my sympathies for the truly disadvantaged and oppressed.
