Conspiracy theories, with their thousands of intricate moving parts, tie up some very smart people endlessly chasing factoids and inventing new conspirators to handle each refutation. In the meantime, the real nefarious stuff is conducted mostly in plain view on the floor of Congress and committee as bills are passed and in the public sphere of corporate takeovers and out in the environment where regulations are flaunted and ignored.

Plus there are the media types who make a living feeding off conspiracy theories, like Alex Jones.

A third factor, I'm sure, is some people who get a laugh out of planting ridiculous conspiracy memes within minutes of any major event, like a mass shooting of children at a school for example, just to see how many people they can get chasing their tails.

I bet the Koch brothers are the source of the energy behind the climate deniers who assert a massive conspiracy between climate scientists and the "coming" UN-takeover / carbon-taxers.
