I have a child who was diagnosed with ADD when he was in the first grade. We decided against meds, but by his 2nd grade in school, we (Dr, school teacher and counselors) realized that we had no choice. Took meds from grade 2-6. Off meds in the 7th grade. He did great, in spite of everything. When he started college, he had a mini episode (felt suicidal) and independently checked himself into a center to get help for a weekend. We learned at that point that he had been misdiagnosed as a child and indeed had Asberger's. He pulled himself together and got back to school, dropping one class (a 6-hour Eng comp class, as he had claimed a writing major.) He picked up that class the nest semester and made an A in it. Anyway, he did graduate from college, a hair from cum laude. With lots of love and patience from his parents and siblings, he has grown into a wonderful young man. Of all my children, he is the one that I am most proud of. And his siblings would probably say the same thing if asked. And he loves cats.
