(205,320 posts)It really used to be that way and I'm old enough to remember it. I remember when Bill Clinton was first elected president, Republican icon Barry Goldwater was a guest on one of the late night talk shows, Jay Leno, I think. And he was asked what he thought of President Clinton, obviously expecting a tirade of disapproval. But Leno(?) was disappointed since Goldwater refused to take the bait. He said he knew what kind of a reaction was expected of him, but he had nothing critical to say. He said that Clinton "is my president, too." However, it now seems that a great deal of the hate is coming from the older generation.
As for the money, you couldn't be more right. I've believed that for a lot of years and it's only gotten worse - embarrassingly obviously so. Fair elections are becoming next to impossible. But those who are benefiting the most will always vote campaign finance reform down.
