In reply to the discussion: Should this image be on DU's home page?? [View all]JoePhilly

I took the two images and put them next to each other on purpose. The picture of the two women above appeared in another OP on DU, and I immediately thought of the 1945 version.
And that's why I created the version in the OP.
As I mention up this sub-thread, the two images are iconic for a variety of reasons.
I find it interesting that some seem concerned that in the 1945 version, the couple didn't know each other, and so placing the images next to each other doesn't work.
Actually ... that fact about the couples simply adds to the layers of meaning and comparison in the juxtaposition.
After all, the images look a great deal alike ... and yet there are some very significant differences in the setting and context of each.
Take the 1945 image. There is a huge celebration occurring because WWII is over. There really is no such celebration happening as we leave Iraq.
So I guess my point is that part of the reason the juxtaposition makes sense to me is that the images look very similar, and yet beneath the visual similarities, there are also some very interesting differences.
In the OP, I decided not to try to explain the images, or point out points of comparison, but to let folks on DU feel whatever they wanted when looking at the juxtaposition.
Hope that helps.
