(27,787 posts)Most of the GOP front runners are trying to avoid discussion of things like DADT currently.
The country is moving rapidly forward on this issue, and its losing it political value for the GOP, except with their far right wing base.
In 2000 and 2004, the GOP in the general election found it advantagous to run against "the gays" (within their God, Gun, Gays platform).
I don't think that will fly in 2012.
Perry just tried it, and that was a huge fail. Romney just got embarrassed by a gay vet. Bachmann had an embarrassing moment when a child of gay parents called her out ... and Newt just told some a gay person at some event to "go support Obama".
So I think you are right that the GOP will probably try to pretend there are no gay people this time around and avoid making this one of their primary targets.
