The OP said could.
Those are two different words with different meanings.
I come from a family of editors.
I noticed that Mittens used a different word than the OP did, and it changes the meaning of the statement.

I certainly don't think the OP was trying to spin or be dishonest or anything like that.
But I do think that in the context of what was being said, would actually made Mittenses statement a dumber statement than if he had said could.
