1. Appears that it is simply an outlet for information.

In today's society, IMO, few people desire to gather information from those who represent positions which differ from their own.
As such, the trend has been to label all information outlets according to the political position the outlet promotes. This 'label' has amazing power.

The label serves as a reassurance ... that only friendly information will be presented... for those who fear what might happen if they accidentally heard information contrary to their personal beliefs.

A label also seems to be a badge of honor/dishonor ... given to outlets which dare to provide information that is or is not, as perceived by any given person or group, 100% pure to a position...

People also align themselves with information outlets whose labels match how they want to be perceived by others... {as if limiting oneself to a single information outlet/source is something to be proud of}

The label is also a weapon...
for example:
By publicly promoting an outlet as being 'far-right' in a forum which leans 'left'... one can prevent many in the forum from ever accessing or believing any information offered by the outlet.
With
The goal being to discredit a source that offers information that one's opposition might benefit from.

IOW, Rather than constantly analyzing and evaluating information from a wide variety of outlets/sources and possibly adjusting one's position based on new conclusions drawn,
lots of people prefer to permanently align themselves with a movement/position to such a degree that they have zero desire to consider / interact with information even remotely contrary to their beliefs.....
