people who's only goal was to keep their jobs by telling him exactly what he wanted to hear. This alternate set of facts created an alternative reality for him. The same is true for his presidency.
Why would anyone think that this person would act any other way? The brainwashing of a "leader" takes place unwittingly by the very folks that are able to keep their positions around that leader by feeding that leader deceptive and untrue information.

The making of a diva... A person of wealth or fame, or both, fires anyone in their immediate circle who doesn't agree with absolutely everything they say/think/believe and re-fill the spot with people who do, until their inner-circle includes ONLY people who agree with absolutely everything they say/think/believe. It's at this point that the diva can only believe what they are hearing. It must be true because everyone in my inner-circle believes it too. The lie becomes the reality.
