Beginning more a century ago, companies and corporations bought up private properties in Appalachia, Colorado, Montana, the Midwest and many places for mining, logging and farming operations. In coal country I know, roads, equipment and infrastructure used for mining also damaged and polluted communities and forced many families and small farmers off their land and into dependence on the companies for work. Understatement.
