(33,643 posts)Boxful of Letters is just another song on Wilco's debut A.M. And yeah, that little 'trilogy' of SBS, Wilco (the Album) and Real Love is absolutely awesome. Not as unique as say Yankee Hotel Foxtrot which is also brilliant but a bit more ... abstract ... but all three are just chock-full of amazing tunes. If you've never heard their 2nd album (double disc set) called 'Being There' I also highly recommend that one. TONS of great songs on it.
Anodyne by Uncle Tupelo is the last album of that band before Jay Farrar left, and most of the band stayed with Jeff Tweedy to form Wilco. I'm a HUGE Tupelo fan, they were brilliant band, WAY more rocking overall than Wilco though Anodyne is a bit subdued compared to their earlier albums No Depression and Still Feel Gone, all 3 of which if you've never heard ... you definitely must. They're like a Countrified Nirvana, and from the exact same era (early 1990's). They're as seminal an 'alt country' band as you can imagine, afaic. I think ultimately ... too much talent in one band led to their demise. Jay and Jeff were both 'frontmen', no getting around it.
Here's a favorite from Still Feel Gone ... this is Jay Farrar (his post-Tupelo band is called Son Volt, they're also pretty good, esp. their debut Trace which is AMAZING,, and third album Wide Swing Tremolo) singing ... he's like 24 at the time of doing this song, but he sounds like a world-weary traveler ... how do you not love a lyric like "What has life, and 50 years in this town done for you? 'Cept to earn your name and place on a barstool?"
And a Tweedy classic from his Tupelo days ...
And a bonus track ... a Jay song from No Depression ... imagine doing this on your debut album ... as freaking kids, practically. I mean this song is SO FREAKING GOOD ... "Whiskey Bottle ... over Jesus ... not forever ... but just for now" ...
