I desperately wanted a cat or dog but my mother claimed she was allergic (it didn’t occur to me at the time that she didn’t explain how she managed growing up with a dog herself). I had a very lonely and unhappy childhood and know I would’ve benefited greatly from having a real pet I could cuddle and interact with. Since moving out on my own I’ve had both and I love them more than the vast majority of people.
