8. One of my cats had been returned to the Humane Society cat cafe

She'd been found as a kitten hiding in a car wheel well, so she was a feral. Someone adopted her and returned her without having the courage to face the adoption people. They just dumped her off inside a box with no explanation.

I adopted her a little over a year ago and put her in the master bedroom so our other adoptee could get used to her smell. For the first three weeks we saw nothing of her - she hid under the bed. We knew she was eating, drinking, and pooping since food and water disappeared and the litter box was used.

Gradually she got used to us and our other two cats (one had escaped and it was five weeks before he returned). She's still spooky - if we get loud, she hides, if we move fast around her, she hides. She is more shy of my husband but loves his scratching - he's an expert at cat scratches. I am pretty certain that a man abused her from her reactions.

She will never be a relaxed lap cat. I have taken her into my lap once but it was clear she was not comfortable so I don't push it. But she has a home where she can be herself and be relaxed and not worry.

In fact all three cats are shy - when the doorbell rings they all dash for hiding places and only one of them comes out where there are visitors. It's a good thing we don't have company very often or we'd never see them.
