He was visiting my city and his motorcade passed by my high school on its way from the airport to the center of town. The principal allowed us to leave early so we could join the people who were standing on the sidewalk and reaching out to shake hands.

Very brief and I was young, but it fits the OP criteria.

Some years ago, I went to a small town summer folk festival where a group of people formed a circle to try a dance that someone was showing us how to do. A woman took my hand to join the circle. When I Iooked up, it was Natalie Merchant.
