I had polio in 1954, just before the Salk vaccine was available. There were lines blocks long to get vaccinated against this horrible disease, and no one questioned its safety or mysterious powers in its molecules. Everyone got vaccinated; they were terrified of polio.
There are now outbreaks of polio in the US, not confined to isolated religious communities where the chance of spread to the general population is small. I wonder if the rise of the anti-vaxxers who refuse to get their babies vaccinated against polio are responsible.
The internet, plus poor education in science and civics.
