(75,887 posts)On 2 different occasions, coffee gave me cred.
My first time in Italy (out of 40 something times) I was visiting a reactor design company. When it was time for a meeting break, we went to the coffee room. Our host asked everyone how much sugar they wanted in their espresso (cafe, to the Italians). When he came to me, I said none. Boom, I was suddenly one of them!
Same thing happened in a bakery in Key West (near the east end of Flagler) with a bunch of older Cuban guys. When they saw me drinking bucci with no sugar. At that moment, I was part of the tribe, sitting at their table for 15 minutes before dawn then off to the golf course.
Every 3 years, same thing! They remembered the Chicago guy who drank their coffee with no sugar.
Second one:
I was in Boston on business to audit a supplier making a chemical that went into an FDA registered product. Had to be there first thing Monday morning so left on Sunday. If I left early, I got upgraded to first class without burning frequent flyer miles. But, I've got nearly all day to kill. So, I decide to drive to Springfield College where an old neighborhood friend was a professor in the music department.
I go to a Dunkin' in the rest area of the turnpike to get coffee. Young lady asks is I want it "regular". I say yes.
As I'm walking out, I take a sip & it's one third cream and sweeter than pecan pie.
I go back in and say I wanted this regular. She says "That is regular." Then it dawns on me; "I'm in Boston".
She laughed & said to give it to her and poured me a new one with nothing in it.
Duh, on me!
