When I had my one visit down South GA Atlanta area, and my friend took me to meet his friends (in college) they were asking me to "talk Yankee!".

Oh, I wasn't offended in any way. 👍🙂

When I came back after ?5 days I had a Southern lilt for about 4 days. Not so unusual also bc back in the late '60s, early "70s NYC still had a lot of the older, and middle aged African-Americans who'd come up from The South. I'd hear the various lilts riding on the buses esp younger when U wasn't allowed yet o ride the subway alone; which to me sounded the same - "Southern". So my ear, and brain were kind of tuned to it already.

But when I went cross-country my bus mates would say "really?! You don't sound like a New Yorker."!

Mystified! Could only think I didn't sound like ?
"Toidy Toid Street" some very heavy ?Brooklyn accent
from the movies. 😀
